The Firebaugh Police Department announced Fernando Campa’s promotion to police chief on Monday in a social media post.
Campa began his law enforcement career with Firebaugh PD in 2003 and has spent more than two decades serving the community. He previously was a K9 officer, Police Activities League director, field training officer, and patrol corporal.
Along with his law enforcement service, Campa has been involved in the community through his role on the Firebaugh-Las Deltas Unified School District Board of Trustees. He served as board president while representing Area 4, with his term scheduled to end in 2026. Campa resigned from the school board to focus on his new role as police chief.
Campa said his focus as chief will remain on public safety while strengthening relationships between the department and residents.
“We are such a small community, we all know everybody,” Campa said. “I want to continue building those relationships and focus on the positive contact side of policing.”
Campa succeeds Sal Raygoza, who retired last year after 10 years as police chief and 31 years with the department. Magda Martinez served as interim chief following Raygoza’s retirement.
Campa Wants to Strengthen School Partnerships
Campa, who has lived in Firebaugh for more than 20 years, said he wants the department to be more involved with residents through community events and partnerships with local schools. During his time as police chief, Raygoza also emphasized having a strong relationship with youth.
Campa said he hopes to work with students on the importance of positive behavior, attendance, and making good choices.
The Firebaugh Police Department has 14 officers, including the chief, sergeant, and two corporals. The department also has dispatchers and code enforcement personnel.
“I am grateful for the opportunity,” Campa said. “I want to improve on what needs to be improved and continue providing the same services the community expects.”
City officials said Campa brings extensive law enforcement experience and a strong understanding of Firebaugh to the position. They also said his commitment to building relationships with residents will be a key part of his leadership.
Campa’s swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for Monday, July 20, 2026, at 5:30 p.m. at the Firebaugh Community Center.
