Thirteen drivers were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence during a DUI enforcement operation conducted by the Fresno Police Department on Saturday, the department announced on Tuesday.

First-time DUI offenders in California face steep consequences, including an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended driver’s license, according to police.

The department has announced plans for another DUI enforcement operation on Dec. 21, as well as ongoing DUI patrols and checkpoints throughout the year in an effort to improve roadway safety.

The holiday season is a particularly dangerous time for drivers.

In December 2022 alone, 1,062 people were killed in alcohol-impaired driving crashes nationwide, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The Fresno Police Department urges the public to celebrate responsibly and avoid driving under the influence.

“Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” Campaign Starts Wednesday

From Wednesday through New Year’s Day, additional officers will be on patrol to identify and stop drivers suspected of being impaired.

This high-visibility enforcement effort is part of the national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, aimed at preventing impaired driving and enhancing road safety.

The department also encourages residents to plan ahead by designating a sober driver or arranging a ride if consuming alcohol.

Impairment can result from alcohol, prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and cannabis products, making it crucial to avoid driving if affected.

Anyone witnessing suspected impaired driving is encouraged to call 911.
