Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

On Monday, OpenAI unveiled a new AI model and desktop version of ChatGPT, along with a refreshed user interface, marking the company’s latest endeavor to broaden the reach of its popular chatbot.

During a livestreamed event, OpenAI’s technology chief, Mira Murati, announced that the update introduces GPT-4 to all users, including those on the free tier. She highlighted the enhanced speed and capabilities of the new model, named GPT-4o, across text, video, and audio interactions. OpenAI’s ultimate goal includes enabling video chatting with ChatGPT in the future.

“This marks a significant leap forward in terms of user-friendliness,” Murati said.

OpenAI has an $80 Billion Value

Backed by Microsoft, OpenAI’s valuation has surpassed $80 billion, emphasizing the company’s need to maintain its lead in the generative AI market while seeking revenue streams amidst substantial investments in hardware and infrastructure for model development.

The ‘o’ in GPT-4o signifies omni, reflecting its ability to handle 50 languages with improved efficiency and quality. It will be accessible through OpenAI’s API, allowing developers to start integrating the new model into applications immediately.

Murati explained that GPT-4o is twice as fast and half the cost of its predecessor, GPT-4 Turbo. The team showcased its audio capabilities, including perceiving emotions, adapting to interruptions, and analyzing facial expressions.

Voice Mode on ChatGPT

OpenAI plans to test Voice Mode soon, offering early access to paid subscribers of ChatGPT Plus. The new model can respond to audio prompts nearly as swiftly as human conversation.

Demonstrations included storytelling, voice tone adjustments, singing, translation services, math problem-solving, and code writing assistance. OpenAI positioned its new model as a robust competitor to Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot.

The launch marks one of OpenAI’s significant milestones since introducing ChatGPT Enterprise. This innovation underscores a broader trend where companies like Microsoft and Google are leading a surge in generative AI adoption across various sectors.

While the AI market booms, concerns about biases and rapid deployment of new technologies persist among academics and ethicists.

The new model’s rollout will begin with ChatGPT Plus and Team subscribers, followed by Enterprise users and then free users with usage limits.

In closing, Murati thanked Nvidia for providing the advanced GPUs that power OpenAI’s technology, acknowledging the collaborative effort behind such innovations.
