Democrat Xavier Becerra won California’s governor’s race Tuesday, defeating Republican Steve Hilton, NBC News projected.

Becerra, a former U.S. health secretary and California attorney general, will succeed Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, who was barred by term limits from seeking another term.

Becerra also served more than two decades in Congress before becoming California attorney general in 2017. He later served as health secretary under President Joe Biden.

Hilton, a former Fox News host and political adviser, ran as a conservative alternative to California’s longtime Democratic leadership.

The Associated Press also called the race for Becerra.
