Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps has injected itself into the U.S. midterm elections with an open letter to Americans calling on them to “wrest control back from corrupt politicians.”

The letter addressed to “the honorable people of the United States of America” accuses the Trump administration of lying about the war against Iran and urges them to enact change at the ballot box.

“Americans need to wake up. Now is the time, as the American political system is at its weakest,” stated the letter, which was published Tuesday.

IRGC spokesperson Hossein Mohebbi said at news conference in Tehran that he didn’t expect the letter to affect the Trump administration’s behavior before the elections, but that voters might hear the message.

“The American people are not knowledgeable about many developments. We believe if they knew more, they would think differently and take other decisions,” he said.

Iran Claims to Have Won the War

The letter could be interpreted as a response to President Donald Trump’s recent claims that the Iranian government is on the verge of collapse. In addition, the president has said that he could “annihilate” Iran if no agreement is reached to end the war. Trump has additionally said that he would seek the war’s end following the midterms.

Meanwhile, the IRGC claimed in the letter that Iran has “won the war” against the U.S. and Israel and cited its control of the Strait of Hormuz and survival of its nuclear program as evidence of that declaration.

“The genocide in Palestine and Lebanon and the endless wars in other parts of the world are carried out with your tax dollars,” the letter stated.

Regarding the Strait of Hormuz, Mohebbi said: “The fact that the Americans might manage, at great expense, considerable trouble and high risk to sneak a small vessel through the Strait of Hormuz under cover of darkness to export, say, 100 or 200 barrels of oil does not mean the Strait is open.”

According to Kpler data, September has seen a recovery of oil exports via the Strait of Hormuz, which are set to hit almost 10 million barrels per day, about half the pre-war volume.

Mending US-Iranian Relations

The letter also contends that America and Iran “can live together in peaceful coexistence” if the U.S. ends aid to Israel, avoids foreign wars, and closes its overseas military bases.

The IRGC said in the letter that its hostility is directed towards the U.S. government, not its people. “‘Death to America’ is a prayer for the eradication of the diabolical ruling elite whose seat of power is the White House,” the letter reads.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian authored an open letter to Americans in April, asking them to look past “the machinery of misinformation” portraying Iran as a threat to U.S. interests.
