Six FIFA World Cup matches hosted in the Bay Area generated an estimated $850 million in economic activity, exceeding projections made before the tournament, the Bay Area Host Committee said Thursday.
The matches, which included a Round of 32 game, generated approximately $410 million in economic activity in Santa Clara County, $240 million in San Francisco County, and $200 million across other Bay Area counties, according to a report developed by Boston Consulting Group for the host committee.
The report estimated the tournament supported approximately 5,100 jobs across the region and drew about 240,000 visitors from outside the Bay Area. It also estimated $345 million in labor income and $30 million in fiscal revenue for local governments.
The remaining Bay Area counties included in the analysis were Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Mateo, Santa Cruz, Solano, and Sonoma.
Economic Impact Exceeds Earlier Projections
A June 2024 report had projected the World Cup would generate between $480 million and $630 million in regional economic activity. The host committee said the post-event total exceeded its earlier estimate by approximately $300 million, driven primarily by higher daily visitor spending.
The analysis used a multi-regional input-output model through IMPLAN economic modeling software, incorporating 2026-dollar figures and current Bay Area economic data, according to the committee.
The World Cup was part of a series of major sporting events hosted in the region. The committee said the World Cup, Super Bowl LX, and the 2025 NBA All-Star Game generated a combined estimated $1.9 billion in economic activity across the Bay Area.
Together, the events supported an estimated 11,000 full-time equivalent jobs, attracted approximately 470,000 visitors from outside the region, and generated about 385,000 hotel room nights, according to the committee.
“Hosting FIFA World Cup 2026 elevated our global reputation, strengthened community bonds, and will pay dividends for years to come,” Bay Area Host Committee President and CEO Zaileen Janmohamed said.
The Bay Area is also scheduled to host the WNBA All-Star Game in 2027 and MLB All-Star Game in 2028.
