Fresno firefighters helped rescue several pets Wednesday afternoon after they were accidentally locked inside a vehicle, the Fresno Fire Department said.

Firefighters from Engine 6 responded to assist the motorist and were able to open the vehicle’s door, safely reuniting the pets with their owner.

The department used the rescue to remind residents about the dangers of leaving children or animals inside parked vehicles, particularly during hot weather.

Temperatures inside a parked vehicle can rise rapidly and create a serious risk of heat-related illness, fire officials said.

The department urged drivers to always check their vehicles before walking away and never leave children or pets inside, even for a minute.
