Georgia police sergeant was shot and killed Tuesday night after a man opened fire on him while he sat in his patrol vehicle following a traffic stop, according to the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office.

Sgt. Chris Fisher of the Warm Springs Police Department had just completed the traffic stop when a man pulled up alongside his patrol vehicle and opened fire, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Fisher was killed at the scene.

Fisher had served in law enforcement for seven years and had been with the Warm Springs Police Department for three months. He is survived by his wife and two children, authorities said.

Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux and the Sheriff’s Office offered condolences to Fisher’s family, friends and fellow officers.

“We honor his service, sacrifice and dedication to protecting his community,” the Sheriff’s Office said.
