With schools back in session, Fresno officials are stepping up code enforcement around elementary schools to improve safety for children walking and biking to class.

Fresno City Attorney Andrew Janz says crews are looking for overgrown weeds, vacant homes that are not properly secured, vehicles blocking sidewalks, and other hazards that could force children into the street.

The city says fines are used only as a last resort, with most property owners cooperating after being contacted, Janz said.

Residents can report hazards through the FresGO app or by calling 311. Janz says code enforcement teams are patrolling neighborhoods right now, especially since school has resumed.
