The California Highway Patrol Fresno office said Wednesday it responded to a “D’oh!” moment after malfunctioning railroad crossing arms struck a vehicle windshield, though no one was injured.

In a statement, CHP described the incident as a reminder that railroad crossings require full attention every time, even when equipment appears to be malfunctioning.

Officials warned drivers never to try to beat crossing arms or drive around them, noting that trains cannot stop quickly and crossing equipment may activate unexpectedly or continue operating after a train has passed.

“Slow down, stay alert,” CHP advised, adding that if a crossing appears to be malfunctioning, drivers should keep a safe distance, find an alternate route and report the issue.

“A few extra minutes are always worth far more than risking your life,” the agency said.
