Sen. Bernie Sanders called for an end to U.S. military aid to Israel in a recent opinion piece published by The Guardian, arguing that Congress should respond to shifting public opinion and halt support for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government.

Sanders, who identified himself as a Jewish American, wrote that criticism of Israel’s actions is not antisemitic and said the country’s response to the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas attack has resulted in widespread civilian casualties and destruction in Gaza. He cited figures on deaths, injuries and damage to infrastructure, and accused Israel of violating international law.

The senator also pointed to Israeli actions in the West Bank and broader regional conflicts, including tensions involving Iran and Lebanon.

Sanders said he plans to force Senate votes on resolutions to block certain U.S. arms sales to Israel, including munitions and equipment he described as contributing to civilian harm.
