A 39-year-old Fresno man was arrested and charged with possession with intent to distribute fentanyl after investigators say he brought 4 kilograms of the drug to a Fresno restaurant, federal prosecutors announced.
According to court documents, Isaac Benito Lopez drove to the restaurant Wednesday intending to sell the fentanyl. Investigators arrested him there.
Authorities later searched Lopez’s residence and found nearly another 400 grams of fentanyl, along with an AR-style rifle equipped with a drum-style magazine containing more than 70 rounds of ammunition, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of California.
U.S. Attorney Eric Grant said the arrest was part of an effort to disrupt large-scale fentanyl trafficking in the community.
If convicted, Lopez faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in prison, a maximum of life in prison, and a fine of up to $10 million.
