California Gov. Gavin Newsom is facing growing pressure to intervene in a scrambled gubernatorial race following sexual misconduct allegations against Eric Swalwell, according to reporting from CNN.

Newsom has held a marathon of calls and meetings with advisers and Democratic leaders as he tries to assess the state of the race and whether to act. Several Democrats have urged him to provide leadership to avoid a potential Republican lockout of the governor’s office in the June primary.

Swalwell, who had been gaining modest support in polls, suspended his campaign after CNN and the San Francisco Chronicle reported on the allegations.

With mail-in ballots set to go out within weeks, Newsom is weighing whether to endorse or stay neutral amid a fractured field of candidates, many of whom remain on the ballot.

Advisers say he is trying to understand shifting dynamics as top Democrats debate next steps in California politics now.
