A Fresno police officer was wounded in a shooting Saturday night while officers were attempting to arrest a man wanted in a domestic violence investigation, authorities said.
Police said officers first responded about 6:28 p.m. to East Garrett and South Clara avenues regarding a domestic disturbance.
Investigators identified Paul Rodriguez Cisneros, 56, as the suspect in the case. Police said he was wanted on domestic violence-related charges, including assault with a deadly weapon with a vehicle and criminal threats, and that officers had confirmed he was armed with a handgun.
At about 9:23 p.m., uniformed officers attempted to contact Cisneros to arrest him, police said. As officers exited their patrol vehicle, they were “immediately met with gunfire,” according to Fresno police.
One officer was struck multiple times in the arm and upper body. A second officer was not injured. The wounded officer was taken to Community Regional Medical Center for treatment.
The investigation continued overnight, and officers later received information that Cisneros was at a residence near Bardell and Vine avenues, police said.
A SWAT team responded to the location and heard multiple gunshots from inside the residence as officers approached, according to police. Nearby homes were evacuated, and members of the Crisis Negotiations Team attempted to negotiate with Cisneros, but he did not respond.
SWAT officers later entered the residence and found Cisneros in the garage with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said.
Cisneros was taken to Community Regional Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition. Police said he remains in custody on the outstanding charges.
