Porterville fire officials have determined that a December trailer fire that killed one adult and four children was accidental.

The Porterville Fire Department released the findings of its investigation Tuesday into the Dec. 7, 2025, fire at a mobile home park at 815 S. Indiana St., Space 18.

Fire crews were dispatched at about 11:18 p.m. to reports of an occupied travel trailer fire with possible victims trapped inside. When firefighters arrived, they encountered heavy flames and began fire attack and search operations.

Five occupants were removed from the trailer, but all five were pronounced dead at the scene. The victims included one adult and four children.

Investigators determined the fire began inside the trailer’s living area and spread rapidly, creating conditions that quickly became not survivable.

The fire was classified as accidental. Investigators said the extent of the damage prevented them from identifying a single point of failure, but the evidence was consistent with an accidental ignition in the area where the fire began.

Officials said they found no evidence of arson or other suspicious circumstances.

The investigation also found that the trailer’s small interior space and open floor plan contributed to the rapid spread of the fire and buildup of heat, reducing the amount of time occupants had to escape.

“This is a heartbreaking tragedy for our community,” said Fire Chief Bryan Cogburn. “While the fire has been determined to be accidental, the speed at which conditions became un-survivable underscores how critical early detection, working smoke alarms, and having an immediate escape plan truly are.”
