A California Highway Patrol officer arrested a person Wednesday on suspicion of arson after authorities said the individual intentionally started a fire during a homeless encampment cleanup along a freeway in the Stockton area.
CHP officers and Caltrans crews were conducting an encampment cleanup as part of ongoing efforts to improve safety along freeways, according to CHP. Authorities said encampments near active traffic can create hazards for motorists and for people living near the roadway.
During the cleanup, the individual became agitated and intentionally set a fire, creating what CHP described as an immediate hazard.
Officers quickly intervened, safely apprehended the suspect and prevented the situation from escalating further, CHP said. The fire was extinguished and no injuries were reported.
CHP said people encountered during encampment cleanups are provided with information about local resources to help resolve encampment situations.
Authorities urged motorists to remain alert near homeless encampments, drive at safe speeds and watch for potential hazards along roadways.
