A 58-year-old man who was stabbed outside a Fresno discount store last month has died from his injuries, and prosecutors are seeking to upgrade the suspect’s charges to murder, police said.

Fresno police said this is the tenth homicide of 2026.

About the Incident

Southwest Policing District officers responded at about 5:41 p.m. on April 28 to the Discount General Merchandise store at 370 B St. for a stabbing investigation, according to Fresno police.

Officers found Leonardo Alejo unresponsive and suffering from an apparent stab wound. Alejo was taken to Community Regional Medical Center for treatment.

Homicide detectives identified Jose Moreno, 32, as the suspect in the stabbing. Moreno was arrested the same day and booked into the Fresno County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder.

Alejo died from his injuries on Tuesday, police said. Detectives are working with the Fresno County District Attorney’s Office to amend Moreno’s charges to murder.
