A Fresno police officer has been arrested on several felony charges related to domestic violence and assault with a deadly weapon on Tuesday, authorities reported.

The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office arrested Officer Efren Lopez, 30, according to a statement from Fresno Police Chief Mindy Casto.

The criminal investigation is being handled by the sheriff’s office, while the Fresno Police Department has launched its own Internal Affairs investigation.

Lopez has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of that inquiry, Casto said.

“Domestic violence is a serious problem in our community, and this is a disappointing reminder that law enforcement officers are not immune to the same problems many in our society face,” Casto said in the statement.

Casto said officers accused of crimes face the same consequences as anyone else, along with the potential loss of their ability to work in law enforcement.

The Fresno Police Department said no additional information would be released because the agency is conducting the personnel portion of the investigation.

The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office said his bail was set at $100,000 and bonded out of jail Tuesday.
