St. Patrick’s Day is a day for celebrating Irish heritage — or just celebrating the Irish — with green beer and other libations.

But it’s also a good day to make sure that at least one member of your entourage volunteers to be the sober driver, or that you hire a car service like Uber or Lyft.

Fresno and Clovis Police and the California Highway Patrol will be on the alert for impaired drivers starting Friday evening.

DUI checkpoints are not on the agenda, but additional Fresno officers will be on patrol from 6 p.m. Friday through 4 a.m. Saturday.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administrators has identified St. Patrick’s Day as one of the deadliest times on the nation’s roadways.

And if you’re celebrating by lighting up a little “green” (marijuana), Fresno Police Lt. Anthony Dewall wants you to know that whether it’s alcohol, weed, prescription medications, or illegal drugs, an impaired driver is a dangerous driver and could be subject to arrest.

The CHP will be conducting saturation patrols Friday and Saturday, said Fresno CHP spokesman Mike Salas.
