A split-second decision on Highway 33 on Tuesday nearly ended in tragedy when a driver attempted to squeeze between a passenger vehicle and a big rig carrying a wide load, according to the CHP – Modesto.

Authorities said the passenger vehicle had pulled over when the driver tried to pass through a narrow gap between it and the commercial truck transporting the oversized load. The maneuver resulted in a violent crash that nearly split the vehicle in half.

Despite the severity of the collision, officials said all people involved survived with only minor injuries.

CHP officers said the crash serves as a reminder that impatience and unsafe driving decisions can have serious consequences, especially around wide-load vehicles that require extra space on the roadway.

Investigators also noted that the driver was wearing a seat belt, which they said likely helped prevent more serious injuries. Officials emphasized that seat belts remain one of the simplest and most effective safety measures in a crash.
