The positive impact of a Clovis medical school on local healthcare is evident as Valley Children’s Hospital welcomes 14 new residents to its pediatric residency program.

Five of the 14 doctors are graduates of the California Health Sciences University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Clovis — more than any other medical school.

The hospital is hosting a White Coat Ceremony at noon Friday, June 26, to welcome the residents. The coats symbolize a commitment to compassionate care, professional responsibility, and the children and families the residents will serve.

Hospital officials say Valley Children’s Pediatric Residency Program offers comprehensive training that develops strong clinical skills and establishes a foundation in primary care, medical education, advocacy, and leadership.

Residents are doctors who continue their training under the supervision of board-certified attending physicians.

Great Need for Pediatric Specialists

The number of children in California with complex medical conditions is expected to double over the next decade to about 700,00, according to the Children’s Specialty Care Coalition.

This is due in part to medical advances that are enabling more children with serious conditions to survive.

In addition, more than 90 percent of Children’s Specialty Care Coalition members said in 2022 that they expected a significant number of pediatric specialists to retire within next five years, according to californiahealthreport.org.
