Starting Monday, every customer entering Costco must wear a face covering. That’s a change from its policy of encouraging customers to wear masks.

Face Mask Requirements

Costco posted an update to the COVID-19 section of its website Wednesday morning:
“To protect our members and employees, effective May 4, all Costco members and guests must wear a mask or face covering that covers the mouth and nose at all times while at Costco. This requirement does not apply to children under the age of 2 or to individuals who are unable to wear a mask or face covering due to a medical condition.
“The use of a mask or face covering should not be seen as a substitute for social distancing. Please continue to observe rules regarding appropriate distancing while on Costco premises. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.”

Social Distancing and Limiting Customers

Costco warehouses will allow no more than two people to enter the warehouse with each membership card.
The company also is asking customers to allow six feet of space between each other.

Special Operating Hours for Members Ages 60 or Older

Also starting on Monday, members 60 and older and people with disabilities will get a special shopping hour — 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Mondays through Fridays.
In addition, Costco is temporarily allowing priority access to the warehouses during all open hours for members who are healthcare workers.

Message from Costco CEO

Craig Jelinek, president/CEO of Costco Wholesale, posted on the company’s website:
“At Costco, as we continue to manage our way through this crisis and support our communities, our employees have been working extremely hard, and we’ve made countless and extraordinary changes in our warehouses, depots, manufacturing facilities and offices. These measures have been for a single, overall purpose: to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of Costco employees and members.”
