A driver was stopped after reaching 112 mph on Highway 99 in Merced County, the California Highway Patrol said Sunday.

CHP Merced said an officer stopped the vehicle Saturday on southbound Highway 99 near Plainsburg Road.

A radar display showed the approaching vehicle traveling at 112 mph while the patrol vehicle was traveling at 65 mph, according to CHP.

At 112 mph, a vehicle travels more than 160 feet per second, CHP said, leaving drivers with little time to react to slowing traffic, lane changes or debris in the roadway.

CHP also reminded drivers about California’s new FAST program, which automatically refers every citation for driving more than 100 mph to the Department of Motor Vehicles Driver Safety Branch, regardless of a driver’s previous point history.

The DMV review is separate from the court case and could result in a suspended or revoked driver’s license.

“This stop ended on the shoulder,” CHP said. “At 112 mph, the next one may not.”
