Community leaders and groups had much to say about Monday’s announcement by Fresno Mayor Lee Brand that he will not seek re-election in 2020:

“I appreciate Mayor Brand for his service to our community. Our next mayor needs to be committed to ending the Tale of Two Cities. They cannot be a divisive political figure that depends exclusively on north Fresno’s support. Fresno is far more diverse and deserves a unifying, experienced leader.” — Fresno City Councilman Miguel Arias

“During his time as a council member and as Mayor, Lee Brand has been a great friend to the Fresno business community. The effect of his many pieces of legislation that helped save the city’s financial standing during the recession cannot be understated, and his agenda of job creation and tackling generational poverty continues to help thousands of Fresnans better their lives. We look forward to his continued efforts to improve our economy between now and January 2021 and thank him for his service to Fresno.”

— Nathan Ahle, president/CEO Fresno Chamber of Commerce

“Leadership Counsel for Justice and Accountability wishes the best for Mayor Lee Brand in his future endeavors. 2020 will be a pivotal election for our city. Leadership Counsel encourages all residents to get involved, get informed and vote. The City of Fresno belongs to people. The future is in our hands.”

— Leadership Counsel for Justice and Accountability

“Mayor Brand has served our city in many capacities for about eighteen years. He’s made numerous positive contributions that have helped make our city more fiscally solvent and improved the economic climate. I appreciate all that he has done and wish him and his family the very best now and in the future.”

—Councilman Garry Bredefeld

“Mayor Brand’s innovative financial policies and careful management of city resources have kept Fresno out of debt.  Public safety, new jobs, and a willingness to work with all sides on any given issue are other hallmarks of his tenure as mayor.”

— Fred Vanderhoof, chairman Fresno County Republican Party
