Left-handed hitting catcher Tyler Soderstrom out of Turlock High School received a $3.3 million signing bonus from the Oakland A’s on Monday.
The A’s selected Soderstrom with the 26th pick in the first round.
His father, Steve, a former Fresno State standout pitcher, was a first-round draft pick of the San Francisco Giants in 1990.
Tyler Sodorstrom’s deal was above the slot value of $2,653,400.
Oakland also announced Monday that it finalized a deal with fifth-round selection pitcher Stevie Emanuels. He got a $400,000 bonus as the 157th pick, which had a slot value of $333,300. Emanuels went 3-1 with a 0.79 ERA and 38 strikeouts in four starts over 22 2/3 innings this year for the University of Washington.
Soderstrom Added to A’s 60-Player Pool
Soderstrom has been added to the club’s 60-player pool with workouts scheduled to begin later this week. The 18-year-old star batted .450 as a junior at Turlock High in 2019. His senior season was cut short by the coronavirus pandemic. He is set to report to the A’s alternate site, likely to be Stockton.
“Super excited to be an Oakland A! Officially signed!” Soderstrom wrote on Twitter.
Steve Soderstrom made it to the majors for one season with the Giants, going 2-0 with a 5.27 ERA in 1996. He pitched for the Fresno Grizzlies in 1998 and 1999 before retiring in 2000.
