A Fresno County sheriff’s deputy shot and critically wounded an armed 28-year-old man early Tuesday after responding to a domestic disturbance near Selma, authorities said.
Sheriff’s dispatchers received a call around 2 a.m. reporting a suicidal man armed with a gun outside a home on South Del Rey Avenue, just south of Manning Avenue, according to the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office.
The incident was later determined to involve a domestic disturbance between Manuel Frausto, 28, of Selma, and a woman with whom he has a relationship, the sheriff’s office said.
Investigators said Frausto, who does not live at the home, arrived at the property to contact the woman. A physical altercation occurred between the two before deputies arrived, according to the sheriff’s office.
The woman was able to separate herself from Frausto and lock him out of the home. While outside, Frausto fired several gunshots, but no people or property were struck, authorities said.
Dispatchers also told responding deputies that Frausto was pounding on a door of the home.
When deputies arrived, they saw Frausto standing in the driveway holding a handgun, the sheriff’s office said. Deputies ordered him to drop the weapon and surrender, but authorities said he refused to comply.
Frausto eventually made a movement that caused one deputy to fire a rifle, striking him in the upper body, according to the sheriff’s office. Authorities did not provide additional details about the movement.
Deputies then approached Frausto, took him into custody and provided medical aid. Emergency medical personnel transported him to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno, where he was listed in critical condition.
Homicide detectives and members of the sheriff’s Crime Scene Unit responded to collect evidence and interview witnesses.
The shooting remains under investigation and marks the third deputy-involved shooting involving the Fresno County Sheriff’s Office this year.
