A former U.S. Army civilian employee from Merced was sentenced to 15 years in prison Tuesday for sexually abusing two children while working overseas, the Department of Justice said in a statement.
Thelmo Meneses Santos, Jr., 60, was also ordered to serve 10 years of supervised release, pay restitution to his victims, and register as a sex offender under federal law.
Court documents say Santos abused the minors multiple times between 2015 and 2023, starting when the victims were 11 years old, while he was employed by the Army in Japan.
Santos admitted to the sexual acts during an interview with law enforcement and attempted to influence one victim to recant her allegations.
He was later arrested in Hawaii by Army Criminal Investigation Division agents.
