California Highway Patrol officers in Merced County responded to a traffic collision on Sandy Mush Road on New Year’s Eve amid dense fog that limited visibility, authorities said.
Officials said the crash occurred during foggy conditions, prompting officers to remind drivers that posted speed limits represent maximum speeds for ideal conditions and may not be safe when visibility is reduced.
Officials emphasized that fog restricts how far drivers can see and how quickly they can react, and advised motorists to slow down and increase following distance to allow more time to respond to hazards ahead.
CHP urged drivers to adjust their speed for road and weather conditions rather than relying solely on speed limit signs and encouraged safe driving throughout Merced County.
