A Chowchilla police officer was killed late Friday after being involved in an on-duty traffic collision, authorities said.

Despite the quick response of first responders, the officer died at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash, the Chowchilla Police Department said in a statement Saturday.

The California Highway Patrol, working with the Chowchilla Police Department, is investigating the circumstances of the collision.

Officials have not released the officer’s name to allow the family time to grieve.

“Moments of tragedy like this are devastating to our department and especially the family of this amazing officer,” Chief of Police Jeff Palmer said. “It is going to take time for our department to heal from this tragic loss.”

Police officials said the fallen officer was a respected veteran with many years of service.
