Nine drivers were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence during a DUI checkpoint in Fresno on the night of July 4, the Fresno Police Department said in a statement.

The checkpoint was held at Belmont and Glenn avenues from 9 p.m. to 4 a.m., where officers said they contacted 227 vehicles.

In addition to the DUI arrests, 20 drivers were cited for operating a vehicle without a valid license or with a suspended or revoked license, officials said.

Police said checkpoint locations are chosen based on data involving impaired driving-related crashes.

The primary goal is to promote public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from the road, authorities noted.

The next DUI checkpoint in Fresno is scheduled for Aug. 16, police said.
