A 22-year-old man was killed in a crash early morning on Highway 41 just north of the transition to Highway 99, the California Highway Patrol said in a statement on Tuesday.

The driver, behind the wheel of a Toyota Camry, was traveling southbound at around 12:30 AM when his vehicle veered off the road.

It drifted onto the right shoulder, traveled up an embankment, and struck a concrete pillar, police said.

The crash, which occurred out of sight of passing motorists, went unnoticed until around 6 AM, when the California Highway Patrol was alerted.

Emergency responders pronounced the driver dead at the scene.

Police said that the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel, and there is no indication of alcohol or drug involvement.

He was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.
