A 30-year-old driver with two prior DUI convictions was arrested early Wednesday after Fresno police said he drove recklessly from Fresno to Selma, running stop signs and red lights before officers tracked him with a police helicopter.

The Fresno Police Department said a motorcycle officer spotted a white truck traveling south on Temperance Avenue at Olive Avenue at about 1:30 a.m. Wednesday and saw the driver run a stop sign at a high rate of speed.

Police said the truck continued driving recklessly, running stop signs and red lights and swerving. The officer requested assistance from the department’s Air Support Unit and other agencies while trying to keep the truck in sight, but eventually lost sight of it.

Air 1 responded and located the truck as it arrived in Selma, police said. The helicopter continued tracking the truck until it parked in the driveway of a residence.

The air crew directed Fresno police motorcycle officers, Selma police officers, and Fresno County sheriff’s deputies to the truck.

Police said the driver, identified as Roger Hernandez, appeared unsteady on his feet and was unable to follow officers’ commands. He was detained without incident.

Hernandez was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and reckless driving. Police said his driver’s license was suspended and that he had two prior DUI convictions.

He was transported back to Fresno and booked into the Fresno County Jail.
