A federal grand jury indicted a Fresno man on a charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm, Acting U.S. Attorney Michele Beckwith said Thursday.

The charge stems from a high-speed chase last month that ended with David Garcia, 32, allegedly trying to drive through a fence at Scandinavian Middle School.

According to court documents, on Jan. 23, law enforcement officers located a vehicle suspected in several recent catalytic converter thefts.

When they attempted to stop the vehicle, Garcia sped off across an apartment complex lawn.

During his attempted getaway, Garcia drove the wrong way on the road, collided with another vehicle, and ran multiple red lights and stop signs before arriving at the school, where his car died, prosecutors said.

Garcia is prohibited from possessing firearms because of prior felony convictions in Fresno County.

According to court documents, officers found a loaded Glock 22 handgun with an extended magazine in Garcia’s vehicle. The handgun and vehicle were both reported stolen.

This case is the product of an investigation by Homeland Security Investigations and the Fresno Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Veneman-Hughes is prosecuting the case.
