The Fresno Police Department will deploy additional officers Saturday for a motorcycle safety enforcement operation focused on violations by drivers and motorcycle riders.

The operation will run from 4 p.m. to 2 a.m., police said.

According to the department, leading causes of motorcycle crashes include unsafe speed, improper turning, right-of-way violations, driving under the influence, and unsafe lane changes. Speeding is the most common factor, accounting for nearly one-third of motorcycle crashes statewide.

Police reminded drivers to check mirrors and blind spots for motorcycles, use turn signals when changing lanes, maintain a safe following distance, and allow enough space before turning at intersections.

Motorcyclists are encouraged to wear Department of Transportation-compliant helmets and protective gear, keep their lights on during the day, use signals well before changing lanes, and watch for turning vehicles.

Police also noted that while lane splitting is legal, it is not encouraged at high speeds in free-flowing traffic.

Funding for the operation is provided by a California Office of Traffic Safety grant through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
