California Highway Patrol Officer Brian Liles, a 16-year veteran who previously served in Fresno, died Monday after an on-duty traffic crash near Tipton, the CHP said.

Liles, 44, was riding a CHP motorcycle when he was involved in a crash at about 5:11 p.m. on Highway 99, just north of Highway 190, on Monday. He suffered critical injuries and died at the scene despite lifesaving efforts, according to the CHP.

Liles graduated from the CHP Academy in 2010 and was assigned to the San Jose Area. He later served in the Hayward and Fresno areas before transferring to the Visalia Area in 2019.

He is survived by his wife, two children, his parents, and two sisters.

The Fresno Police Department joined the CHP in mourning Liles, saying he served communities “with honor and compassion.”

“Our hearts are with the California Highway Patrol as we mourn the loss of Officer Brian Liles,” Fresno police said.

The CHP said Liles’ “dedication to public service and commitment to protecting the people of California will not be forgotten.”
