A man was arrested Tuesday after police said he repeatedly struck his girlfriend, prevented her from escaping, and strangled her during a physical altercation.

The incident happened at about 4 a.m. when the victim and her boyfriend, Joseph Alvarado, were involved in an altercation, Fresno police told GV Wire.

Police said Alvarado struck the woman multiple times in the back of the head. When she attempted to leave the bedroom through a window, Alvarado grabbed her and pushed her onto the bed.

Alvarado then wrapped his arm around the woman’s neck, making it difficult for her to breathe, police said.

The woman was eventually able to escape and run across the street to a neighbor’s home, where 911 was called.

Alvarado was arrested and booked into the Fresno County Jail.

Jail records show Alvarado was booked on suspicion of misdemeanor battery of a non-cohabitant, felony assault likely to cause great bodily injury, and felony false imprisonment with violence.

His listed bail amounts totaled $35,000.
