Fresno police arrested 95 drivers suspected of driving under the influence during a nearly three-week enforcement period that ran through Labor Day weekend, the department said.

The enforcement was part of the national “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign, which placed additional officers on patrol to identify and arrest suspected impaired drivers.

Of the 95 drivers arrested, 11 were cited on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs, while three were cited for suspected impairment involving a combination of alcohol and drugs, police said.

The Fresno Police Department also held DUI checkpoints Aug. 22 and Aug. 29, resulting in 24 DUI arrests.

Police said drunk driving crashes accounted for 34% of all traffic deaths in California in 2024, equivalent to about four deaths per day.

A first-time DUI charge in California carries an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties and could result in a suspended driver’s license, according to the department.

Police reminded drivers that impairment can result from more than alcohol. Cannabis, illicit drugs, prescription medications, and over-the-counter medications can also affect a person’s ability to drive safely.

Funding for the enforcement program was provided by a California Office of Traffic Safety grant through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
