A 17-year-old inmate was severely injured Friday after being beaten by five 16-year-old inmates at the Tulare County Juvenile Detention Center, according to the Tulare County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies were called to the facility just before 1 p.m. for an assault, authorities said.

When they arrived, they learned the five teens had attacked the 17-year-old, causing severe head injuries.

The victim was taken to a local hospital, where his condition is unknown, officials said.

All five suspects are in custody on felony assault charges, according to the sheriff’s office.
