Three drivers were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence during a DUI checkpoint conducted Thursday night in Clovis, police said.
The checkpoint was held from 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. on eastbound Barstow Avenue between Villa and Minnewawa avenues.
According to the Clovis Police Department, 212 vehicles passed through the checkpoint and 179 drivers were screened. Officers arrested three drivers for alleged DUI offenses and cited six other drivers for license violations. Two vehicles were also towed during the operation.
The checkpoint ended at 10:30 p.m., earlier than planned, after officers were reassigned to investigate a major injury hit-and-run collision elsewhere in the city.
Police said DUI checkpoint locations are selected based on reported incidents of impaired-driving-related crashes. The department said the primary purpose of the checkpoints is to improve public safety by removing suspected impaired drivers from the road.
Clovis police said another DUI checkpoint is scheduled later this month.
Funding for the checkpoint was provided through a grant from the California Highway Patrol’s Cannabis Tax Grant Program.
