Midland, Texas, police are responding to an active shooter incident Friday morning in the city’s southwest area, CBS reported.

Police Chief Greg Snow said officers heard gunfire from a building near Industrial Avenue and Wall Street and quickly secured the area.

Armored units and multiple law enforcement agencies were deployed as an ongoing standoff with the suspected shooter continued. Officials said several people were transported to local and regional hospitals, though the extent of injuries was not immediately released.

City officials urged residents to avoid the area while emergency responders work to resolve the situation and ensure public safety.
