The alleged shooter in the killing of Caleb Quick appeared in court Tuesday, when a Fresno County Superior Court judge set a juvenile transfer hearing for Sept. 1 and a confirmation hearing for Aug. 21.

Prosecutors told the court they expect to call up to 15 witnesses during the transfer hearing and estimated proceedings will last about five days.

The prosecution also said it has received its expert’s report ahead of the hearing.

Family members of the victim attended the hearing. The suspect’s mother was the only family member present on behalf of the defendant.

The court ordered that the alleged shooter remain in custody and allowed him a 24-hour period to have a phone call with his mother.

Caleb Quick’s Father Reacts to Ongoing Court Cases

Following the hearing, Caleb Quick’s father, Stephen Quick, said the ongoing court process has brought up difficult emotions for the family.

“We are hoping for a resolution,” Quick said. “We have to relive it a couple more times.”

When asked how he felt seeing the suspect in court, Quick said, “He is alive, doing well while my son is not here.”

Quick also said he remains cautious about the outcome because of the result in the transfer hearing involving the alleged getaway driver. In that case, the court found she was rehabilitative and kept her case in juvenile court. Her trial is scheduled for July 28.

Quick plans to join other families in similar judicial situations that will head to California’s Capitol on Aug. 15 to protest Proposition 57. The proposition forces the court to decide where the minor will be tried as an adult, taking that authority from county district attorneys.

Timeline of the Murder

Quick, 18, was shot to death on April 23, 2025, outside of a McDonald’s restaurant in Clovis.

The Clovis Police Department described the homicide as “targeted and planned.”

That day, police responded at 8:57 p.m. to reports of gunfire near Willow and Nees avenues.

Officers found Quick with a gunshot wound to the head. He was transported to a hospital, where he died.

Investigators say the suspects arrived in a 2024 white Tesla Model 3 at a McDonald’s restaurant around 7:44 p.m. and left the lot at 8:12 p.m. Quick arrived at 8:22 p.m., followed by the male shooting suspect, who headed toward the restaurant around 8:33 p.m.

The Tesla returned to the parking lot moments later and parked several rows away. Surveillance video showed the shooting suspect entering the McDonald’s at 8:38 p.m., sitting briefly, and then following Quick outside.

Police said the shooting occurred as Quick approached his car. The shooting suspect ran west toward the city of Fresno and climbed into the Tesla about a minute later. Willow Avenue is the border between the two cities.

A handgun was later recovered during a search warrant, Clovis Police Chief Curt Fleming said.

Surveillance footage showed the suspects leaving the scene before officers arrived.
