A man was found fatally injured in a Fresno alley late Sunday night, the Fresno Police Department said in a statement.

Officers from the Southwest Policing District responded around 10:26 p.m. to a welfare check near North Glenn and East Voorman avenues. There they discovered Elias Santiago-Pedro, 46, lying on the ground with blunt force trauma to his upper body.

First responders attempted lifesaving efforts before Santiago-Pedro was taken to Community Regional Medical Center, where he died at 10:55 p.m, police said.

Homicide detectives believe Santiago-Pedro, who lived nearby, was walking through the alley when he was attacked.

Investigators are canvassing the neighborhood for witnesses and video surveillance that may have captured the assault.
