An early morning crash near Reedley left an 18-year-old man dead and another injured after a violent single-vehicle accident, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Isael Acevedo, 18, of Reedley, was killed when the Honda Accord he was driving veered off Vino Avenue near Jim Savage Road around 6:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

The Fresno County Sheriff Coroner’s Office identified Isael on Wednesday afternoon.

The vehicle struck a metal irrigation pipe before careening through a vineyard, hitting several trees and overturning multiple times.

Neither Acevedo nor his passenger, Jorge Medina, 18, was wearing a seatbelt, and both were ejected. Acevedo was pronounced dead at the scene, while Medina sustained minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital.

Passenger Bites Officers

Medina allegedly became combative in the ambulance, biting two officers who intervened, authorities said.

He was arrested on charges of assaulting law enforcement officers and will be booked into Fresno County Jail after receiving medical clearance.

The officers were treated for their injuries and are expected to recover. Investigators are looking into the cause of the crash, with alcohol as a possible factor pending toxicology results.

Authorities reminded the public of the dangers of impaired driving ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday, urging responsible decisions behind the wheel.
