US Energy Department Concludes COVID-19 Likely Originated From Lab Leak

The U.S. Department of Energy has reportedly concluded that the COVID-19 pandemic most likely arose from a laboratory leak, according to a classified intelligence report that has been provided to the White House and key members of Congress.

The report reveals that the Energy Department was previously undecided on how the virus emerged, but now joins the FBI in saying the virus likely spread via a mishap at a Chinese laboratory.

The department’s new conclusion is significant as the agency oversees a network of U.S. national laboratories that conduct advanced biological research. The updated report highlights how different parts of the intelligence community have arrived at differing judgments on the pandemic’s origin, with some assessing it was likely the result of a natural transmission, and others still undecided. The new intelligence and analysis leading to the Energy Department’s change of position are not detailed.
