US Senator Chris Van Hollen has openly questioned Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin about Israel’s bombing campaign in Gaza during a hearing on additional U.S. military assistance to Israel and Ukraine. The senator expressed deep concern over the relentless bombing in the densely-populated Gaza Strip, as illustrated in a recent YouTube video.
According to the Associated Press, the death toll in Gaza has escalated to nearly 18,000 people, the majority being women and children. UNICEF Executive Director Katherine Russell described the death toll as one that “should shake us to our core.”
Van Hollen highlighted these alarming statistics during his questioning of Austin, emphasizing the high number of civilian casualties. He also cited Russell’s statement that at the current rate, more than 420 children are being killed or injured in Gaza each day.
