A power pole fire in Fresno on Wednesday afternoon led to the collapse of multiple utility poles and power lines, prompting a shelter-in-place advisory for nearby residents and a road closure, authorities said.

The Fresno Fire Department said firefighters responded just before 3 p.m. to the 4000 block of North Ila Avenue after receiving reports of a power pole on fire.

While crews were at the scene, the pole collapsed, bringing down several additional poles and power lines.

Because of the potential danger from energized electrical lines, nearby residents were advised to shelter in place and remain inside their homes as a precaution.

West Avenue between Ashlan and Griffith avenues was closed to traffic.

Pacific Gas and Electric Co. later confirmed that the affected power lines had been de-energized. However, the roadway remained closed Wednesday while crews worked to complete repairs.

The incident was among several weather-related emergencies that kept Fresno firefighters busy Wednesday, including reports of downed power lines and power pole fires throughout the city.

Fire officials reminded residents to treat all downed power lines as energized, even if they are not sparking or making noise.

Anyone encountering a downed power line should stay away, keep others clear of the area, and call 911, officials said.
