A convicted felon on parole was arrested Monday after allegedly discarding a loaded, stolen handgun during a police compliance check in Coalinga, authorities said.

A detective patrolling near Sunset and Tyler streets spotted Jorge Albert Orozco Rodriguez driving a white Mercedes-Benz, according to a Tuesday news release from the Coalinga Police Department.

Orozco Rodriguez pulled into a carport accessible from a nearby alley, where the detective contacted him after he exited the vehicle for a parole compliance check.

Police said Orozco Rodriguez ignored the detective’s commands and quickly moved toward a corner of the property while reaching toward his waistband.

He then discarded a loaded .40-caliber Springfield XD pistol before complying with the detective’s commands, authorities said.

Investigators determined the firearm had been reported stolen in Oregon.

Police said Orozco Rodriguez is a convicted felon, a documented member of the Norteño criminal street gang, and on active parole through the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

His criminal history includes multiple felony convictions, including a murder conviction as a juvenile, according to police.

Orozco Rodriguez was arrested on multiple firearm-related charges, including being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition, carrying a concealed and loaded firearm, and possessing a stolen firearm and a large-capacity magazine.

He also faces a charge of destroying or concealing evidence and was placed on a parole hold.

Orozco Rodriguez was booked into Fresno County Jail.
