Former President Barack Obama endorsed Michigan Democrat Abdul El-Sayed for U.S. Senate in a campaign advertisement released Monday, urging voters to back the candidate in a race that could help determine control of the chamber.
“That’s why I’m asking you to support Abdul El-Sayed for the United States Senate,” Obama says in the ad, according to The Detroit News.
Obama highlighted El-Sayed’s pledge to reject corporate PAC donations and his opposition to foreign military aid. The advertisement features archival images of Detroit, including its skyline and the Detroit Institute of the Arts.
El-Sayed, of Ann Arbor, faces former Republican U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, of White Lake Township, in the Nov. 3 election.
Obama, who recorded advertisements for 24 Democratic campaigns, plans to join El-Sayed and Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jocelyn Benson at an Oct. 24 rally in Detroit.
El-Sayed acknowledged past criticism of Obama, saying the former president faced difficult circumstances.
