A 30-year-old woman has been arrested in connection with a hit-and-run collision that killed a 78-year-old pedestrian in Fresno last month, authorities said.
Mariah Irion was arrested Friday at a residence near Lamona Avenue and Bond Street, the Fresno Police Department said.
The collision occurred Sept. 13 about 8:24 p.m. near McKinley and Normal avenues.
Responding officers found the pedestrian unresponsive in the roadway. Despite lifesaving efforts by police, emergency medical personnel, and firefighters, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators determined the man had been pushing a cart across McKinley Avenue when he was struck by a westbound vehicle, police said.
Detectives used an automated license plate reader to identify a possible suspect vehicle, which officers later found abandoned in a neighborhood northeast of the collision scene.
The vehicle had been covered with tarps and secured with rocks taken from a neighboring residence, according to police.
Investigators found physical evidence and vehicle damage consistent with striking a pedestrian. The vehicle was impounded as evidence.
Detectives subsequently identified Irion as the suspect responsible for the collision, police said.
Irion was booked into the Fresno County Jail on suspicion of felony hit-and-run causing death, vehicular manslaughter, and driving with a suspended license.
