Fresno State says more than 55% of its football fans are Spanish speakers. So, it seemed academic to televise its Sept. 9 home opener against Eastern Washington primarily on a local Hispanic network.

The school spoke to most of the local TV stations, but a deal with UniMás developed the most, Learfield general manager Zachary Fraser said. Learfield manages the media rights for Fresno State.

“We could do something pretty special here,” Fraser said.

The athletics department says it will be the first college football game broadcast by a Univision-affiliated channel.

The game — the last to be placed on the TV schedule — will air locally on UniMás (KTFF-61). It can be found with an antenna on Ch. 41.1 or 21.6; Xfinity Ch. 12; DirecTV Ch. 61, and Dish Network Ch. 61 or 271.

A local company hired by Fresno State will produce the game. Jessi Losada, who broadcasts several sports for Fox Deportes, will handle the play-by-play.

Kickoff is at 6 p.m. at Valley Children’s Stadium.

English Broadcast on Stream

Bulldogs fans can watch the game in English, but they will have to run an end around to find it. The video feed — with an audio feed from the Bulldogs Radio Network team of Paul Loeffler, Pat Hill, and Cam Worrell — will be at the Mountain West Network online and through various streaming apps.

“It’s probably been frustrating for the last 40 years (for Spanish-speaking fans) to watch it only in English. So I think it gives us an opportunity to test if this is something that can work in the future. And I would imagine that if it works, that we’ll see a lot more of both English and Spanish opportunities pop up,” Fraser said.

With the Eastern Washington broadcast figured out, all 12 Bulldogs games will be on TV. The season kicks off Sept. 2 at 9 a.m. at Purdue, broadcast on the Big Ten Network.

‘Sunday Morning Matters’ Still on Hiatus

KSEE-24’s Alexan Balekian continues to interview political newsmakers under the branding of “Sunday Morning Matters.” Yet, the public affairs show continues to be on hiatus. The show hasn’t aired in its normal 8 a.m. Sunday time slot since June.

Recent interviews with U.S. Senate candidate Adam Schiff, and congressional candidate Adam Gray have aired in full online.

Station management says the show may return in September. In the interim, the statewide political show “Inside California Politics” has aired in its place — when not pre-empted by NBC Sports programming.

40 Years of ABC 30’s Dale Yurong

Congratulations to ABC 30’s Dale Yurong, who celebrated 40 years on the air today.

He started in 1983 as a sports anchor before eventually moving to news and anchoring.

He received a proclamation last week from the Fresno City Council.
